Cathy Cowan Becker

Cathy Cowan Becker is a Research Fellow at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. Cathy has a 25-year career in journalism, communications and public relations. She is currently communications coordinator for a social science research center at Ohio State University, where she is also pursuing a master’s in environmental policy.

In her volunteer time, Cathy is chair of the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 Columbus campaign, asking the city of Columbus, Ohio, to commit to 100% renewable energy. This year she is helping volunteers in several other cities in Ohio launch Ready for 100 campaigns of their own. She has also been active with Sunrise Movement, getting arrested for the Green New Deal outside Rep. Steny Hoyer’s office in Washington, D.C. in December.

Cathy was trained as a Climate Reality leader in 2015 in Iowa and served as a mentor at the Climate Reality leadership training in Denver in 2017. She trained again in Atlanta just last week. She is a past group leader for the Columbus, Ohio, chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby.

Cathy has done environmental study abroad trips to Costa Rica (twice), Iceland, and South Africa. She also traveled to Paris for the 2015 climate conference and to Oceti Sakowin camp at Standing Rock in 2016. She marched with 400,000 people for climate in New York City in 2014, as well as 150,000 for science and 250,000 for climate in Washington, D.C., in 2017.
