Viviana Grieco is a Research Scholar at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity and Associate Professor of History & Latin American and Latinx Studies at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Professor Viviana L. Grieco studies the political economy and political culture of the Spanish Empire. Her research focuses on the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata in the eighteenth century. She is the author of The Politics of Giving in the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata. Donors, Lenders, Subjects and Citizens (The University of New Mexico Press, 2014). Dr. Grieco is currently working on a second monograph tentatively titled, Conflict and Voice. Additionally, she has started a new research project on the global commerce of ephedrine, a commodity traded in both legal and illegal networks. Dr. Grieco teaches courses on Colonial and Modern Latin American History; Women, Gender and Sexuality in Latin America; and Historiography and Methods for graduate students.
Dr. Grieco was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She earned her B.A. at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina and her M.A. and Ph.D. at Emory University. Before joining UMKC, she taught at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and held a visiting position at Emory University. Her courses contribute to the general education curriculum, the non-Western requirement in History, and the Latin American and Latinx Studies Program.
