Money on the Left conference announcement: April 6-7, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Binzagr Institute is pleased to announce Money on the Left: Word, Image, Praxis, an interdisciplinary conference co-sponsored with the Modern Money Network: Humanities Division and the University of South Florida. The event will be held on April 6-7, 2018, in Tampa, FL.

Money on the Left gathers humanities scholars, artists, economists, and politicians from around the world to develop new ways to imagine the relationship between money, culture, and politics. While many on the political left think of money as a tool of exploitation, this conference draws from Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) to portray modern money as a boundless public utility that should be used to serve the public purpose. Understood in this way, money appears to be an indispensable means for building a more just, egalitarian, and sustainable world.

“We are thrilled to support broader explorations of how MMT can be utilized as an analytical lens to redefine a world full of possibilities for a prosperous, sustainable, and equitable society,” said Fadhel Kaboub, president of the Binzagr Institute.

Money on the Left is co-hosted by two research scholars from the Binzagr Institute: Scott Ferguson (Assistant Professor of Film & Media Studies, University of South Florida) and William Saas (Assistant Professor of Rhetorical Studies, Louisiana State University).

“MMT makes clear that we can afford to have nice things, like Medicare for All and a Job Guarantee program,” said William Saas. “Less understood are the radical possibilities of modern money for the arts and public culture. That’s where Money on the Left comes in,” he added.

“An expanding multi-pronged movement, the MMT perspective demands robust interdisciplinary collaboration across the social sciences and humanities. Money on the Left marks a necessary first step in that direction,” said Scott Ferguson.

The conference also features a number of Binzagr Institute scholars, including a keynote speech by Binzagr Institute research director Mathew Forstater (Professor of Economics, University of Missouri – Kansas City), and two interviews, recorded exclusively for this conference, with Kaniela Ing (Hawaii State Representative and candidate for U.S. Congress) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (actor, director, and founder of hitRECord).
